EXPLANATORY ESSAY

Abortion is a very sensitive topic in today’s world, it  requires a considerable amount of understanding when addressing the ethics behind it. Abortion is described as ending the life of an embryo/fetus impregnability. Around 1820 law against abortion begins to appear, making women aborting in unsafe ways. After Roe VS Wade case, the supreme court ruled that abortion will be legal in the United State, giving women the right to make their choise and abort in a safe way. After abortion became legal there was an increase in its rate, but around 1999 the number of abortion sarted to decrease. Many thinks that their is a relationship with the decrease of abortion and the improviment of the contratvies methods. Different methods to prevent pregnancy have been developed and that is the cause of why abortion rate have been decreasing in the past few years. 

Abortion is a topic that are disccused from the age of  teenegers to old people, and everyone has it own opinon and its own different way to present or express their ideas, information, and thoughts. I will be exploring and giving a brief overview and analysis of two articles that are from two very different forums. These two articles presents their information in different ways to different audience, genre, content, purpose. One article is scholarly and the other one is from a magazine or news, and both of them are different. People reads according to what they are interested to read and also their discourse communities.

The scholar article “Dramatic Decreases in US Abortion Rates: Public Health Achievement or Failure?” by Diana G. Foster, is written for a youth discourse community or academic audience since is normally a reading for informational purposes. This article is written by opinion, evidence, and data, that support the idea that abortion rate is decreasing ever since birth control are more esay to get, and abortion is legal. For example, the article says “Among women aged 15 to 19 years, there was a modest reduction in the proportion who were using no method, an increase in the use of any method at last instance of sexual intercourse, and an intriguingly large increase in the use of emergency contraception over the same period”. This shows that the article is giving information about young people, people that are in the age of being in school, and young people might be interested to read this type of information. Even thought is not presented in an informal way, it is an article that is mainly used for young people. The essay called “Navigating Genres”, by  Kerry Dirk, states that “Although textbooks are directed at students, they are often more formal affairs meant to serve a different purpose than this essay”. Meaning that this article has the purpose to present important information, and also shows that people can trust the article, because it is not the same when an article starts with the word “So”, than if it starts with a nice and formal complete sentences. “Among women aged 15 to 19 years, abortion rates dropped by almost half ”, this shows that this article is an informative article that was written for a youth discourse community, since if have the goal to inform young people that contractives method are decreasing the abortion rate because we, as young people, are preventing pregnacy in a correct way. 

This scholarly article is structured in a form of a brochure with four lines of short paragraphs and the title and subs-title have a colorful color that can catch the reader’s attention. Another reason why we can say it is for a youth discourse community, or for a scholarly audience, it’s the website it was published. This article was written by a student in the University Of California and published at a website, Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, this website is owned by The University Of California. This demonstrates that is was written for young people, mainly college/university student and above, because it has an advanced language. If you give this article to a 14 years old kid to read it, maybe at first he/she would be lost if he/she does not have a high level of reading.

The article from the NBC NEWS called, “Abortion rates go down when countries make it legal” by Maggie Fox, was written for a popular audience with the purpose of educate them with this informative article. This article have many statistics involve to support the information, such as “Abortion rates have fallen over the past 25 years”, or  “The report finds about 56 million abortions occur every year — nearly 50 million of them in developing countries”. This demonstrates that this article have a plethora of statistics and it make it believable to the audience, since the article not only talk about the United States, if not, other countries, for example, “Switzerland had the lowest abortion rate at 5 per 1,000 women. The U.S. rate is 13 per 1,000 women, the same as Britain’s, the report found. Colombia and Mexico had abortion rates of 34 per 1,000 women. Pakistan’s estimated abortion rate was the highest at 50 per 1,000 women”. This article shows the statistics of other countries, informing the audience what’s happening in other places that have the same struggles as the United States. This article is accessible and relevant to the information that needs to be provided in order to support this type of topic. How “The World of Texts: Intertextuality” says, “ Thus for the operations of physical and biological reality to enter into the discourse of science they must be observed, collected, and inscribed by acceptable procedures of experiment, observation, or other legitimized methods. Then they are usually further processed from the initial textual form as raw data into charts, tables, databases and other contextualized and textually processed aggregates”, (Bazermna, 64). The article, “Abortion rates go down when countries make it legal”, is not about science, but is about health, meaning that it also need data to support the idea that abortion is decreasing, because the audience wants to know why they are saying that, what evidence do they have.  Bazerman states that different text, needs different evidence to support it, and that’s true because you want to support and proof all you are saying so the audience can get to know you as a trustworthy source. 

As the scholarly article, the article from the NBC NEWS introduce the improvement of the contractive method, but it’s presented in a different way than in the scholarly article, ““Improved contraceptive use, and in turn, declines in unintended pregnancy rates are the likely driver behind the worldwide decline in abortion rates,” Susheela Singh, vice president for international research at the Guttmacher Institute, said in a statement”. We can notice that in the article for popular audience, they introduce the topic as a quote, and also they named the person who said it and who that person is. This is important because it proof the audience that the article is correct and makes readers to trust the magazine, news, etc. On the other hand, The scholarly article mainly talks about the Long-Lasting method called LARC, and how this method has increased his use. According to the article “LARC use among contraception women increased from 8.5% to 11.6% between 2009 and 2012”.  This academic article only talks about one contractive method, and that shrink the audience since it just talk about LARC. 

Articles have different audience, purpose, and even though they talk about the same topic, they have different context.  Comparing the academic article and the magazine article, these two have different audiences, and different contexts. The scholarly article have an academic audience since its include statistics of a specific age which is 15 to 19 years old. This academic article presents its idea in a formal way with the purpose to inform the reader. On the other hand, the News article is for a popular audience, and it presents a general information for everybody. The different way to present the information and different statistics, shows the difference between an article for a popular audience, and an article for academy audience. Both articles have statistics and evidence to support their information, and make their article believable.
